CELLULAR SYSTEMS INTEROPERATION PROTOCOL: IS-41

Target Audience
Engineers and technicians working with planning and operation of cellular systems interconnection networks.

Pre-requirements
Basic knowledge of communication protocols and common channel signaling.

Goals
Develop a deep understanding of IS-41C protocol EIA/TIA, emphasizing support and authentication procedures and short messages exchange.

Course Syllabus

  • P Functional description and evolution of IS-41;
  • Characteristics of regulation reviews and documentation structure;
  • Automatic roaming (IS-41.3): procedures and messages for:
    • Call delivery, call delivery with paging between systems, and terminals authentication;
  • Supplementary services: procedures and messages for:
    • Unconditional transfer in case of no answer or if busy;
    • Transfer of established calls and conference calls;
    • Caller ID;
    • Voice mail message notification;
    • Voice mail retrieval;
    • Call acceptance by password;
    • Call interception with PIN;
  • Handoff between systems (IS-41.2): procedures and messages for:
    • Handoff procedure for support and dual mode terminals;
  • Short message service: procedures and messages;
  • Operation, administration, and maintenance (IS-41.4): procedures and messages;
  • Signaling network characteristics (IS-41.5):
    • Network architecture, description of layers and components, and description of TCAP (Transaction Capabilities Application Part);
    • Message “packaging” sample.
